Origin of Puritanism: Student Forum

Puritanism is one of the protestants in the 16th and 17th century which separated from the Catholic. It wanted a simple religious ceremonies and a strict moral behaviour. In 1509, Henry VIII fell out with the Catholic Church because of his marital affairs. He decided not to obey any instruction from the Pope or be under his authority, and the formed the Church of England which is also the Anglican church.

After Henry VIII, came Edward VI who tried burn the catholic. After Edward VI came Mary I, who in her time was called the ”Bloody Mary” burn the Protestants.

In 1558 Elizabeth 1st came and brought an act called the Elizabethan Settlement who tried to solve the the pendilum of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I. Elizabeth I died in 1603 and was succeeded by King James I, who authorise the KJV of the Bible.

Puritanism is a type of religious belief rather than a religious sect. It’s a reformed Calvinist theology that gave birth to Presbytarian, Baptist, Congregationist and Non-Conformnist. (groups not conforming to the Anglican rules)

Puritanism rose out of discontent with the Elizabethan Settlement which was felt by radical Protestants to be giving in to “Popery” (the Roman Catholic Church)
